My first pencil carvings on this scale is a train – and in December 2015 he went viral on Facebook and the Internet! I even appeared on a TV show in Barcelona. Since then, I’ve been busy taking orders, answering questions and conduct interviews.
More recently, I have done only work commissions and with it brings an interesting and challenging designs. The most complicated designs I’ve Elephant Walk, commissioned by Elephant Museum Epiphany. start simple design, elephant with foil stamped logo. Then I got carried away … after seeing the reference I decided that I needed to carve a family of elephants walking across the Serengeti, for carving only one elephant was not challenging enough! So I stopped track hours … but it took a few days.
I carved trains using 5x diopter magnifying lamp. Then I bought a lamp 10x diopter. Still feel like I can get more detail, I bought 90x trinocular on the arm, which is basically a microscope that can be setup for long-distance field work. It takes some time to get used to focus, but once I did, it took my carving to a new level. I will never be able to get details that I can get in the skin of an elephant or a baby baggage, which is really crazy hard to carve without breaking … I found myself holding my breath a lot.
some of my other commissions also benefited from the enlargement of the scope of the new. Details of leather gloves is not possible with a magnifying lamp. Another new technique I used in the project using crayons to baseball. I learn something new, if you heat the graphite and drop the crayons melt on it, there was an instant bond! I tried the first color pencil, color pencil which is really hard to carve! I also use crayons to the brain in pencil “in Art”. This was my first pencil with no moving parts and is designed for Brain Surgery by grateful patients.
I am an artist, not a pencil Purist … I do not quarrel about the internal carving something out of lead and move to a different pencil. Which is what I did with the tractor burst out of a pencil. Pencil itself is important to the client, but the lead was too small to carve. So I used a bigger lead to achieve the desired effect
